چکیده

New theory on measuring gain and index changes in femtosecond pump probe studies suggests a spectral artifact is present which may have obscured the ultrafast response in previous studies of InGaAsP laser diode amplifiers. A femtosecond heterodyne pump-probe technique is implemented using an Erbium-doped stretched-pulse modelocked fiber laser centered at 1.55 gm and used to obtain simultaneous measurements of transmission and phase changes. These results are analyzed considering the spectral artifact and an experimental scheme for eliminating the artifact is discussed. Thesis Supervisor: Erich P. Low frequency Raman gain measurements using chirped pulses.

Two-beam coupling, attributed to Raman gain, is observed in dielectrics using chirped femtosecond pulses. A time resolved pump-probe geometry is used to vary the frequency difference between pulses in the terahertz frequency band. Stimulated Raman scattering couples the pulses transferring energy from the higher to the lower frequency beam, resulting in a dispersion shaped curve as a function o...

Fabrication of an integrated high-quality-factor (high-Q) optofluidic sensor by femtosecond laser micromachining.

We report on fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of a high-quality factor (i.e., Q-factor of ~3.24 × 10(6) measured under the critical coupling condition) integrated in a microfluidic channel using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Coupling of light into and out of the microresonator has been realized with a fiber taper that is reliably assembled with the microtoroid. ...

Femtosecond sources at 1.5 microns and their application for time-resolved spectroscopic studies of semiconductor devices

Optical communication systems require optoelectronic devices and components that operate at a wavelength of 1.5 plm, where standard optical fibers have a minimum transmission loss. Investigating the performance of these devices and understanding the underlying physics requires good sources at this wavelength. In particular, the investigation of their ultrafast nonlinear response, which will ult...

رفتار نورشکستی بلور تیتانات باریم و کاربردهای آن در اندازه گیریهای اپتیکی در زمان واقعی

In this research we measure some of the optical parameters of Barium Titanate crystal (BaTiO3), such as signal beam gain, coupling constant (exponential gain coefficient), change in index refraction and photorefractive sensitivity, which are very significant for optical data storage. In all experiment, two- wave mixing configuration at 632.8 nm (He- Ne laser) were used. Experimental data f...

Performance Comparison of Gain - Coupled and Index - Coupled DFB Semiconductor Lasers - Arthur

Comprehensive numerical simulations with the transmission-line laser model (TLLM) are used to compare the behavior of gain-coupled DFB lasers with index-coupled DFB lasers fabricated from identical materials. These simulations compare slope efficiency, threshold current, spectra, smallsignal modulation bandwidth, maximum-intrinsic modulation bandwidth, large-signal transient response and chirp,...
